In addition, any Big Bear Lake Rotarian wearing our blue polo shirts with the Rotary emblem is admitted free and is expected to sell raffle tickets and Oktoberfest pins. SANTA CLAUS PROGRAM
The Santa Claus Program of the Big Bear Lake Rotary Club has a long tradition. We have done this program for well over 25 years. There are three phases of this program. All club members are expected to participate. Spouses are also encouraged to participate. New members are expected to play “Santa” the first year of their membership. Being a Santa is one of the most rewarding things a Rotarian can do.
The first phase begins in mid to late November where a Thursday night Rotary meeting is turned into a stocking stuffing party. Somewhere in the neighborhood of 1,200 Christmas stockings are stuffed with toys, candy, and goodies. This is a spouse’s night and older children are invited to participate. After the stockings are all stuffed dinner is served.
The second phase starts with collecting names of children that want Santa to visit them. We publish two or three phone numbers and families call and ask to be put on the list for Santa to visit them. The lists are compiled and Santa routes are established. Members are needed to staff phones and help compile lists.
The third phase is dressing Santa for each of three nights. There are 5 to 6 Santa teams each night. A Santa team consists of a Santa, driver, and navigator/helper. During the course of these three nights somewhere over 1,200 children are visited. Santa delivers the Christmas stockings and stuffed animals. A rover team follows up delivering food baskets to needy families as determined by the Santa teams. There are also a team of helpers at the staging area the help prepare the Santa teams and facilitate any problems encountered by the Santa teams. Food and drinks are available for the Santa teams when they finish their runs. Dress Code: Casual for all events, Santa costumes is furnished by the Club.
